The Ceylon Hill Gooseberry is a beautiful ornamental shrub that produces a stunning display of pink or purple flowers.
During spring the flowers are shortly followed by round purple berries that have few seeds. The small sweet berries are delicious eaten fresh or in jams as they are similar in taste to blueberries and raspberries but have a thick, rich juice.
Once established the bush is very frost hardy and will fruit as far south as Victoria. Currently it isn't classified as a weed in Australia, but has been recorded as a weed in parts of Florida, it is recommend netting the shrub to reduce seed dispersal.
